The General Statistics Office of Vietnam said in its report that Vietnam’s GDP expanded by 8.46% year-over-year in the fourth quarter of 2025. The speedup at the end of this year shows that the economy is steadily getting better. It is growing in several important areas.
Industry and exports are the main drivers
Vietnam’s exports grew by 17% to over US$475.04 billion throughout the course of 2025. Industrial production also grew by 9.2%, showing strong manufacturing. Vietnamese products are competitive on the world market.
Inflationary pressures are not too bad on the home front. In December 2025, the consumer price index was 3.48% higher than it was the same month the year before. Retail sales went up by 9.2% in 2025, indicating high household spending.
The U.S. has a record trade surplus
Vietnam recorded its largest-ever annual trade surplus with the U.S. As one of the biggest exporters to the U.S. Market: Vietnam continues negotiations with Washington on a potential new trade agreement.
Still, most Vietnamese enterprises are thought to have overlooked the effects of the 20% tariffs. The U.S. government put these tariffs on several Vietnamese commodities during the Donald Trump administration. They aimed to limit Vietnam’s trade advantage.
Vietnam’s trade surplus has significantly increased due to a surge in exports to the U.S. Vietnam’s total exports in 2025 are estimated to be about US$475 billion. Shipments to the US are more than US$53 billion. This number is much higher than the US$19.5 billion record set in 2024.
By 2025, this spike is predicted to bring Vietnam’s trade surplus with the U.S. to around US$34 billion. This total is far higher than the previous peak in 2024. Vietnamese authorities reported this figure, and their data has historically been more conservative than U.S. statistics.
The most recent statistics from the U.S. statistical office, however, show that by September 2025, Vietnam’s trade surplus with Washington had grown to US$29.5 billion. This is more than the US$23.5 billion surplus reported for all of 2024.
What is next?
Vietnam starts 2026 with a healthy economy caused to strong growth, high exports, and a significant trade surplus. But there are still problems. Particular issues include trade with the U.S. and potential global protectionist policies. These could impact exports in the future.
