The IRGC said in a statement from the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters that the operation used advanced missiles and drones. These weapons hit the aircraft carrier about 340 kilometers from Iran’s maritime border.
The IRGC stated that the attack made the carrier unable to work for a short time. As a result, it and its strike group had to leave the area.
According to PressTV, Friday, March 13, reports that the aircraft carrier and its escort ships left the area right away after the event.
The IRGC said that the operation was part of Iran’s efforts to protect its sovereignty. These efforts are against what are called foreign military threats in the area.
There were rising tensions in the Middle East at the time of the reported attack. In the last few weeks, there have been more military clashes between regional powers and international forces.
The IRGC also said the day before that they would attack the US Fifth Fleet base in Mina Salman, Bahrain, with missiles and drones.
Iranian officials said that the attack was meant to hit several important parts of the base. Specifically, the attack targeted locations for storing and maintaining drones, anti-drone defense systems, and support equipment.
The IRGC said that the attack came in two waves of missiles and drones. Moreover, it did a lot of damage to important military buildings at the base.
The Iranian military says that the operation also targeted US military bases in Bahrain.
