New York, Thekabarnews.com – According to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, the U.S. assaulting Venezuela and detaining President Nicolás Maduro and his wife are against both U.S. federal law and international law.
Mamdani published the statement on his personal X account on Sunday, January 4, 2026, after hearing that the US military had arrested the Venezuelan president and planned to keep Maduro in a federal detention center in New York City.
Mamdani tweeted, “This morning I got a briefing on the kidnapping of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife by the US military and plans for their imprisonment in federal custody in New York City.”
He said that attacking a sovereign state on your own is not legal. He went on to say, “Attacking a sovereign state on your own is an act of war and against both federal and international law.”
Mamdani also talked about how the policy affected people in New York, especially the Venezuelan diaspora community. He said that attempts to remove the Venezuelan government not only hurt individuals in other countries, but they also have a direct effect on social conditions in New York.
Mamdani added, “The open attempt to overturn this dictatorship not only affects people living overseas, but it also directly affects New Yorkers, including tens of thousands of Venezuelans living in the city.”
He said that the safety of the people in the city is the most important thing to the local government right now. Mamdani pledged to monitor the situation and issue warnings as necessary.
“My first concern is their safety and that of all New Yorkers. My administration will monitor the situation and provide the necessary guidance,” Mamdani stated.
