Madiun, East Java, Thekabarnews.com—Indonesia’s Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has arrested Madiun Mayor Maidi in a sting operation (OTT) in East Java. The case allegedly involves project fees and corporate social responsibility (CSR) funding.
KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo confirmed the operation. He said that the investigators conducted a closed investigation and arrested 15 people in the Madiun area, Monday, January 19.
“Yes, it is true. Today, Monday, January 19, our team did a secret investigation and arrested about 15 people in Madiun, East Java,” Budi informed reporters, as quoted by detikNews. He confirmed that Mayor Maidi was among those apprehended.
Alleged link to project fees and CSR funds
The KPK says that the sting operation is related to claims of illicit fees from government projects and the wrong use of CSR funds in Madiun City.
“Reports link this hand-catch operation to project fees and CSR funding in the Madiun city,” Budi stated
Investigators also found cash during the operation, although the commission has not said who allegedly gave or received the payment yet. “Our team has secured evidence in the form of cash,” Budi added.
Investigators seized Rp100 million
Budi said investigators believe the seized cash amounts to Rp100 million. However, he stressed that investigators are still checking the flow of funds and the responsibilities of everyone involved.
The KPK headquarters sent nine of the 15 arrested individuals, including Madiun mayor Maidi, to Jakarta for further questioning.
People apprehended during the operation now hold the status of examined parties. Indonesian law says that the KPK has 24 hours to figure out their legal standing. This requires the commission to decide whether to formally designate them as suspects.
The case has drawn widespread national attention. This is because it adds to a growing list of corruption investigations involving regional politicians. It also highlights persistent concerns over local governance, public procurement practices, and transparency.
The KPK has said that it will provide additional information after the investigation is over.
