Vietnam, Thekabarnews.com—Truong Hai Group, a Vietnamese company, is getting ready to make its own Vietnamese-branded passenger car by 2027. The company has been making cars for a long time. Now, it is becoming a carmaker in the US. The move is a big deal for them.
THACO head Tran Ba Duong agreed with the idea. He said that this change would make the company Vietnam’s second-largest domestic passenger car brand, after VinFast. VinFast is owned by billionaire Pham Nhat Vuong and makes electric cars.
THACO’s decision could be a big step forward for Vietnam’s car industry. Historically, the sector has always depended on foreign companies.
Bui Ngoc Huyen started Vinaxuki, which pushed for a “Made in Vietnam” vehicle vision. The company was the leader in the light truck market from 2006 to 2009.
Vinaxuki eventually went out of business because the company could not pay its debts. The incident highlights the challenges of developing a domestic car manufacturing industry.
THACO’s entry into the passenger car market could lead to a new push for Vietnamese-made cars.
The news comes at a time when Vietnam’s car market is changing quickly. Businesses in the country are starting to do better.
VinFast’s performance makes the momentum very clear. The company sold 175,099 electric cars in 2025, which was the most it had ever sold.
His figure was about the same as the total sales of three big foreign car companies that do business in Vietnam each year:
- 71,954 Toyota cars
- 53,229 Hyundai cars
- Ford: 50,450 units
The numbers show that more and more people want to buy cars made in their country, especially as electric cars get more popular.
THACO has picked 2026 as a key year for growth after restructuring.
The company plans to spend about $1.4 billion on several things, such as making cars, property, farming, and logistics.
Thaco Auto, THACO’s car division, also plans to release a line of minibuses with the Thaco name in June 2026. This is the first step in getting more cars into the US.
Thaco Auto wants to sell 96,600 cars in 2026 and make 65.5 trillion VND (about 2.58 billion USD).
The division currently employs approximately 13,000 people. Its projected export revenue exceeds $30.5 million.
THACO’s actions show that they want to make Vietnam’s car industry more competitive in the region. The company also seeks to strengthen the country’s manufacturing ecosystem.
The new Vietnamese-branded passenger car could have an even bigger impact on the country’s auto market. This would be a new step for Vietnam in its goal of making its own car brands. Ultimately, the country aims to compete with the best in the world.
