Thekabarnews.com – Getting extra sleep on the weekends may not only make individuals feel better, but it may also help keep their hearts healthy.
Long hours, stress, and the demands of daily life can make it challenging for many adults to get enough sleep during the week. This continuous lack of sleep, sometimes known as “sleep debt,” has been related to a higher chance of having heart problems.
Getting enough sleep on the weekends may help the body recuperate from some of the stress that comes with not getting enough sleep during the week.
At the European Society of Cardiology Congress, a big research project looked at data from more than 90,000 patients who were tracked for over 14 years. The study found that people who made up for lost sleep on weekdays by sleeping in on Saturdays and Sundays had a risk of heart disease that was up to 20% lower than people who didn’t. The protective impact was especially noticeable in people who usually slept less than the recommended seven hours on workdays.
In this cohort, additional weekend sleep correlated with an approximate one-fifth decrease in the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Researchers say that getting a sound night’s sleep every night is still the best way to stay healthy in the long run, but the study shows that sleeping in on the weekends can be helpful.
For people who have trouble getting enough sleep throughout the week, sleeping late on Sunday could not just be a nice thing to do; it could also be a minor but important way to improve heart health.
