The Qur’an talks about Salah
Allah Almighty frequently emphasizes the importance and duty of Salah in the Qur’an. One of the most famous verses is when Allah said,
“Recite, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do.” (Surah Al-‘Ankabut 29:45).
This text shows that Salah is a moral protection that keeps people from doing bad things and makes them more conscious of their spiritual side.
Allah adds in another verse:
“And when you have completed the prayer, remember Allah standing, sitting, or [lying] on your sides. But when you become secure, re-establish [regular] prayer. Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times.” (Surah An-Nisa 4:103)
This testimony shows that Salah is an organized and regular duty that controls a Muslim’s daily life and teaches them discipline and mindfulness.
Authentic hadith on Salah
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, “The first thing a servant will be held accountable for on the Day of Judgment is the Salah.” (Sunan Abu Dawud, no. 864 – Hasan Sahih). This incident shows how important Salah is.
In another true story, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, “Praying prevents a person from skepticism and polytheism.” (Sahih Muslim, no. 82)
This hadith emphasizes prayer as the definitive demarcation between believing and disbelieving in Islam.
Salah movements might be good for your health
From a medical point of view, the physical movements of Salah are very similar to modern ideas about health and exercise. Each Salah position has its own health benefits:
- Standing (Qiyam): Helps with posture, balance, and muscle stability.
- Bowing (Ruku’): This stretches the spine, eases back pain, and gets blood flowing to the brain.
- Prostration (Sujud): Helps the brain get more blood and oxygen, which is good for neurological health and cognitive performance.
- Sitting (Tashahhud): Improves joint flexibility, activates pelvic nerves, and helps keep the spine in line.
- Turning the head (Salam): This relaxes the neck muscles and makes the cervical spine more flexible.
A 2017 study in the Journal of Physical Therapy Science found that Salah movements are like low-impact exercise, which means they are beneficial for people of all ages, even older people.
Salah and mental health
Salah is important for mental and emotional health as well as physical health. Concentrating on Salah (Khushu’) has been demonstrated to lower stress, anxiety, and depression symptoms.
The International Journal of Behavioral Medicine presented research that shows that frequent spiritual practices, like Salah, are linked to:
- Less stress hormones like cortisol
- More emotional stability and calmness
- Better sleep quality
- Better emotional control and resilience
Salah also helps you be more mindful, which is a state of concentrated awareness that is often employed in current psychological therapies to deal with stress and mental health problems.
Conclusion
Salah is a discipline that Allah has created that brings together spiritual obedience and real physical advantages. It improves a person’s relationship with Allah, makes them better, relaxes their mind, and makes them healthier.
In a world that is getting faster and more hectic, Salah is a timeless way to find spiritual and physical balance. Allah asked us to do it long before contemporary science started to figure out how wise it is.
May Allah help us stay strong in our Salah and let us enjoy its benefits in this world and the next. Aamiin.
