Mempawah, West Kalimantan, Thekabarnews.com—The proposal to construct the Mempawah regent a new official residence has infuriated the populace. It is back on social media. The plan’s budget is Rp15 billion.
The project’s planned tender process in February 2026 has made the ongoing arguments even worse. Many people didn’t know when the development would happen or how important it was. This sentiment persists, especially since the area’s economy and infrastructure are still having problems.
The United Student-Youth-Community Alliance Action chair, Muslim, publicly criticized the Mempawah regent, Erlina, for her inconsistency. He said that the regent had already told the protesters that the regional administration team would look at the project for the regent’s official residence again. Furthermore, she would put it on hold
“Don’t think the people of Mempawah have forgotten. During the protest, the regent made it clear that the project would not proceed and would undergo another review. Until now, there was no official clarification or openness, but now it is on the list of things that are up for bid. This hurts public trust,” Muslim said, as quoted in local media, Monday, February 23.
Muslim stated that the project shows that people don’t know what is important. He says that people are still having trouble with money, broken roads, recent forest fires, and not enough public services. The issue isn’t just about a building. Instead, it has to do with what leaders think is right and wrong.
“People are still having a hard time, so the focus should not be on official comfort,” he added.
Muslims said that if the government goes through with the tender without telling anyone, the alliance will hold a big protest.
“If they do this, Mempawah will not be quiet. We are ready to move in bigger groups,” he said.
The alliance also told the regent to make a public statement and think about how things are bought to win back the people’s trust.
Because the debate over government openness and budget priorities is getting more heated, people in Mempawah are talking a lot about the Rp15 billion plan for a regent’s official residence right now.
