Pontianak, Thekabarnews.com—Pontianak Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) fined the owner of a local fruit shop Rp500,000. This was after they found out that the shop’s trash had polluted a public drainage channel. This indicates that people remain concerned about how cities manage waste.
The store in question was on WR Supratman Street in South Pontianak, West Kalimantan. Satpol PP took action after residents told them about a pile of trash with the store’s name on it. The trash was found in a drainage canal near Pontianak Mall.
Agency head Ahmad Sudiyantoro stated that police initiated an investigation after the report, which also appeared on social media. The investigation revealed that the business was responsible for the trash. However, the owner denied intentionally disposing of it in the canal.
“According to our investigation, the owner did not mean to throw the trash into the drainage. However, careless waste management caused the trash to end up in the canal,” Sudiyantoro said, Thursday, April 9.
The authorities decided that the case was about carelessness and not doing something on purpose. Even so, Satpol PP fined the owner and told them to pay the fine directly to the regional treasury.
Satpol PP stated that the violation contravenes Pontianak Regional Regulation (Perda) number 19/2021, which pertains to maintaining peace and safeguarding the environment. In addition, the enforcement action is part of a bigger plan to make sure that people in the area obey the rules. The operation also aims to help keep the city clean.
Sudiyantoro said that punishment is not only a way to make people obey the rules but also a way to keep them from breaking them. Therefore, he told all the business owners in Pontianak to be more careful about how they throw away their trash.
“Every business needs enough room to store trash and make sure it gets thrown away in the right places,” he said.
It is hazardous for the public to throw away trash in the wrong way, especially in drainage systems. Blocked canals disrupt water flow, increase the risk of flooding during heavy rain, and damage the city’s environment and appearance.
Officials say waste accumulation in drainage channels contributes significantly to flooding in Pontianak, especially in rainy conditions.
Satpol PP has pledged to intensify their monitoring and enforcement efforts to prevent similar violations. In addition, officials also said that people who live and work in the area need to work together more to keep it clean.
“We hope everyone learns something from this case. Everyone has a responsibility to keep the city clean so that everyone can live in a healthy and comfortable place,” Sudiyantoro said.
The case shows how important it is to properly handle trash, especially in cities where environmental problems can quickly hurt people’s health and the infrastructure. Improper waste management can lead to pollution, disease outbreaks, and increased costs for city maintenance.
