Kubu Raya, Thekabarnews.com—West Kalimantan regional police (Polda Kalbar) are still looking into what led a ninth-grade student at SMP Negeri 3 Sungai Raya in Kubu Raya to try to attack someone with a Molotov. Polda Kalbar says the case shows how complicated it is for teens to deal with family pressure, their own mental health, and digital content.
Chief of the West Kalimantan regional police (Kapolda Kalbar), Pipit Rismanto, said that early results show that the student’s behavior at school was normal every day. As a result, before the event, teachers and classmates reportedly didn’t notice any signs of aggression or social apathy.
“Our first assessment shows that the student was able to function normally in school. But we are looking more closely at the pressures coming from his family,” Pipit said, Wednesday, January 4, as quoted in local media.
Polda Kalbar also found that the student really likes shooting-style video games. Police think that this, along with the emotional stress he was under, may have affected his imagination and behavior. Pipit, on the other hand, stressed that the teen does have goals and a sense of direction in life.
“When we asked him about his hobbies, he said he likes to play shooting games. He has a clear goal: he wants to be a mechanic. That shows he really does have a purpose and plans for the future,” Pipit added.
Polda Kalbar made it clear that playing video games doesn’t always make people violent. However, they did say that teens who are already dealing with mental or family issues should be careful about how much violent content they watch. Particularly, if a parent is not present to provide assistance, they must exercise caution.
The case has initiated fresh discussions on the measures parents, schools, and communities should take to monitor children’s mental health. Pipit said that stopping similar events from happening again depends on early intervention. They also stressed the importance of families communicating openly and monitoring digital activities in a balanced manner.
Polda Kalbar is still in communication with family members, teachers, and friends to gain a clearer understanding of how the student felt before the event. Furthermore, Polda Kalbar has involved child psychologists in the case. Their involvement guarantees that rehabilitation takes precedence over punishment.
Polda Kalbar reiterated that they are closely monitoring the student and have not discovered any new security threats at the school. Additionally, police cautioned the public not to hastily make conclusions. Their caution is important while the investigation remains ongoing.
“This case reminds us that teens often have problems that they do not talk about. Understanding those pressures is the key to stopping violence and helping young people find better ways to express themselves,” Pipit remarked.
