Mempawah, Thekabarnews.com—Mining holding company MIND ID has formally started a large project in Mempawah, West Kalimantan, to process bauxite into aluminum. This growth is a huge step forward for Indonesia’s efforts to improve its mineral processing industry.
The Smelter Grade Alumina Refinery (SGAR) Phase 2 project and PT Inalum’s second aluminum smelter had their groundbreaking ceremony on Friday, February 6. The Daya Anagata Nusantara Investment Management Agency (BPI Danantara) put on the event.
The President Director of MIND ID, Maroef Sjamsoeddin, said that the groundbreaking signals the commencement of a completely integrated industrial supply chain for Indonesia’s aluminum sector.
“This groundbreaking for SGAR Mempawah Phase 2 symbolizes the start of a full chain of aluminum manufacturing. This facility is not simply for creating products; it is part of a national industrial ecosystem that encompasses raw materials, energy, infrastructure, and people,” Maroef told Danantara CEO Rosan Roeslani during the ceremony in Mempawah.
SGAR Phase 1, which is already in operation, is part of the integrated development. Furthermore, SGAR Phase 2, Inalum’s second aluminum smelter, and a power plant in the Mempawah area will help it operate. People think that investing in the full project will cost Rp104.5 trillion.
According to MIND ID, the project’s goals are to make Indonesia less dependent on imported aluminum raw materials and to increase domestic value-added processing. In addition, the project aims to make the country more competitive in the global metals market.
The corporation aims to establish a comprehensive ecosystem to support the continued growth of the country’s mining and manufacturing sectors. The planned integrated aluminum complex aims to generate employment opportunities and enhance the local economy. Moreover, it will help Indonesia’s long-term goal of making the downstream sector more industrialized.
MIND ID is pouring money into this project to prove that it really wants Indonesia to be a leading producer of completed and polished metal goods instead of just a raw mineral exporter. The Mempawah project will be a key aspect of Indonesia’s efforts to restructure its economy as building goes on.
