Mempawah, Thekabarnews.com—The Mempawah Regency administration, West Kalimantan, finally has officially canceled plans to build a house for the regent (Pendopo).
Officials made this choice because many students, youth groups, and local residents urged them to do so. After a public meeting at the Mempawah Regent’s Office on March 1, people made their choice.
The Alliance of Students, Youth, and Community Groups organized the hearing. This event marked an important turning point in a battle that had recently been receiving significant negative media coverage. After previous accusations of indecision, local leaders gave a clear answer at the forum.
There were police officers from Mempawah, Deputy Regent H. Juli Suryadi Bordadi, Regional Secretary H. Ismai, and Ami Febrianto, who is responsible for the Regional Development Planning Agency. Their presence made the problem seem worse and showed that the government was willing to listen to people’s problems.
Muslim, the leader of the alliance, said that bringing back the plan to build the pendopo had hurt people’s trust. Additionally, it indicated that the government wasn’t concerned about the community’s urgent needs. He said that many people thought the project was pointless. The evidence was especially clear since basic services were still having problems.
Deputy Regent Juli Suryadi said that the government had talked about the demands with the regent and the people in charge of the regional budget. It was clear what would happen: the work on the official residence would not go ahead.
“We have officially canceled the project,” he said. The hearing minutes indicate that the government made this choice.
The administration also said it would redirect the project’s budget to higher-priority programs, including the regional water supply initiative (PJAM). This program aims to improve the infrastructure for clean water. Officials said that this change was a real attempt to meet important public needs.
People had been telling the government to cut back on spending on things that are not necessary and put more money into programs that directly help people.
This choice is a big answer to that pressure. People who watch say that this action shows how important it is for citizens to have a say in local policy decisions.
Muslim said the cancellation was a win for Mempawah, and the government changed its mind because they all worked together.
“This case is a clear example of how people’s opinions can change what happens. The government can no longer ignore the people,” he stated.
Local governments are strengthening their commitment to transparency, accountability, and public responsiveness. As more people become involved, policymakers must elevate their standards. This will ensure that budget priorities align with the needs of the population.
