Jakarta, Thekabarnews.comâIn Indonesia, the two most common ways to find out when Ramadan 1447 Hijri/2026 will start are by using hisab (astronomical calculation) or rukyatul hilal (observing the crescent moon). These two methods aim to ensure that the decision regarding when Muslims across the country should begin fasting is correct from both scientific and religious perspectives.
Astronomical calculations show that the conjunction (ijtimak) before Ramadan 1447 H happened on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at 19:01 WIB. But that day, when the sun set in all of Indonesia, the crescent moon was still below the horizon.
The height was between -2 degrees 24 minutes 42 seconds and -0 degrees 58 minutes 47 seconds. The angle of elongation, on the other hand, was between 0 degrees 56 minutes 23 seconds and 1 degree 53 minutes 36 seconds.
The numbers show that it was not as easy to see the crescent as it should have been. Therefore, Ramadan could start 30 days after Sha’ban ends. The official Isbat session will still make the final choice.
The Religious Affairs Ministry (Kemenag) conducted rukyatul hilal in 96 different places in Indonesia to learn more about the stars. The observation included religious offices at the provincial and district levels. In addition, they also worked with Islamic groups and set up religious courts. Officials examined reports from 37 important sites they were keeping an eye on during the isbat session.
Director General of Islamic Community Guidance at Kemenag Abu Rokhmad said that the government puts safety and science first. They use both hisab data and field observations to make a final decision.
âThe government makes sure that the decision about when Ramadan starts is based on science, is open, and includes all relevant stakeholders,â Rokhmad said, as quoted at Kompas on Monday, February 16.
Kemenag gives people a link to a live stream of the isbat session so they can watch it and be honest. In addition, people can see reports from observation sites, presentations of astronomical data, and the last official announcement made during the press conference.
Officials are telling people to wait for the official word before they start their fast. The isbat session will officially announce when Ramadan 2026 will start in Indonesia.
Millions of Muslims are getting ready for the holy month. Once again, science and tradition are bringing the country together to celebrate Ramadan.
