Thekabarnews.com – Men who are going through in vitro fertilization (IVF) may have a better chance of keeping a pregnancy if they ejaculate within 48 hours of giving a sperm sample. Instead of waiting longer, this shorter interval can be beneficial.
A clinical research study at the First Hospital of Jilin University in China included 226 men who were told to ejaculate about 36 hours before delivering their IVF sample. The other 227 men were told to wait between 48 hours and seven days.
The group who abstained for a shorter time had a 46% ongoing pregnancy rate. Meanwhile, the group that abstained for a longer time had a 36% ongoing pregnancy rate.
This suggests that more frequent ejaculation may lead to sperm with reduced DNA damage and enhanced overall quality. However, it comes with marginally lower sperm numbers.
This finding is consistent with previous research indicating that shorter intervals between ejaculations can enhance semen quality. Additionally, it helps reduce DNA damage.
Several experts who were not part of the study pointed out its flaws. The research consisted of mixing cycles with both fresh and frozen embryos, which may provide varying success rates.
The study also found a strange pattern: the short-abstinence group had lower fertilization rates but higher ongoing pregnancy rates. This indicates that a reduced number of embryos were generated, although those that were created may have exhibited greater viability.
Critics contend that these “exceptional” findings necessitate replication. Also, they call for enhanced control of confounding variables prior to implementing substantial modifications to guidelines.
Even with these problems, the study shows a straightforward and cheap technique that clinics might want to try. It also suggests that frequent ejaculation may enhance natural conception, in addition to IVF cycles.
