Thekabarnews.com—Human Rights Watch, a nonprofit organization that fights for people’s rights, says that Israeli soldiers may have dropped bombs with white phosphorus on civilian areas in southern Lebanon.
Many people are worried that this could be illegal when it comes to helping others. This is crucial because the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons says that using white phosphorus in civilian areas is against the law.
It also makes it challenging to keep civilians safe during war, as the use of white phosphorus can cause severe injuries and fatalities among non-combatants in conflict zones.
The organization said that the event happened on March 3 in Yohmor.
Human Rights Watch says it saw seven pictures that look like artillery shells dropping white phosphorus on homes. Experts said that the pictures looked like airburst white phosphorus artillery. This type sends burning chemical bits flying over a wide area.
The organization said that the attack hurt businesses and homes in the area. It also destroyed at least two houses.
When white phosphorus comes into contact with oxygen, it catches fire. It makes a lot of thick, hot white smoke and could hurt you a lot if it touches your skin. It could kill you.
The exposure to white phosphorus can cause irreversible damage to your cells.
Human Rights Watch said they knew the bombs were M825-series 155mm artillery shells. This is because the smoke moves through the air in a way that is different from how other types of artillery do it, indicating that the unique dispersion pattern of white phosphorus smoke can lead to unpredictable exposure and harm to civilians in the vicinity.
The organization says that using airburst white phosphorus over populated areas is especially hazardous. This is because the burning particles can spread out and hurt people without warning.
International humanitarian law prohibits the use of weapons that cannot distinguish between military and civilian targets.
After the investigation, Human Rights Watch told many countries to think about how they will work with the Israeli military.
The organization told Israel’s friends, especially the US, UK, and Germany, to stop sending weapons. They also encouraged them to think about punishing people who let these horrible things happen, such as military leaders and government officials who are complicit in human rights violations, by implementing sanctions or legal actions against those individuals.
The war between Israel and armed groups in southern Lebanon is still going on. It has changed many people’s lives.
According to Human Rights Watch, violence is getting worse in the area. More than 500,000 Lebanese people have had to leave their homes.
The organization also believes that the most recent actions of the Israeli army killed at least 394 people. They say these actions hurt about 1,000 more.
Humanitarian groups have been saying that more violence at the border could make things worse for people, potentially leading to further casualties and worsening the humanitarian crisis that already affects thousands of displaced individuals and families.
Additionally, it could put civilians in more danger, especially as the ongoing conflict exacerbates the already dire humanitarian crisis faced by displaced individuals and families, leading to increased suffering and potential loss of life among vulnerable populations.
International observers are closely monitoring the situation as investigations into the alleged use of white phosphorus continue. They emphasized the importance of protecting civilians during armed conflict.
