Madinah, Thekabarnews.com – The Sacred Chamber/Hujrah Syarifah (الحجرة النبوية الشريفة), which is one of the most important places in Islamic history, is located in the middle of Al-Masjid an-Nabawi. This sacred room is where the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, together with his two closest friends, Abu Bakr al-Siddiq RA and Umar ibn al-Khattab RA, is buried.
Originally, this room was Sayyidah Aisha RA’s private chamber. After the Prophet ﷺ died, it became holy ground. This was because he was buried exactly where he died, as divine wisdom and prophetic tradition dictate.

This room has stayed the same at its core over hundreds of years of mosque additions and renovations. It has been carefully conserved both architecturally and spiritually as the heart of the Prophet’s Mosque.
The setting of the blessed graves
Three of the most important people in Islamic history are buried in the Sacred Chamber. In the middle is the grave of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is placed with the highest respect. To his right lies the grave of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq RA, who was the first Caliph of Islam and the Prophet’s closest friend. The grave of Umar ibn al-Khattab RA, the second Caliph, is a little behind Abu Bakr RA. He was buried there after Sayyidah Aisha RA gave him permission.
This exact arrangement shows not only historical events but also how close these guys were spiritually. Their lives were intertwined in their dedication to Islam and service to the Ummah.
Layers of safety and preservation
Throughout Islamic history, people have gone to great lengths to maintain the Sacred Chamber’s sacredness. A pit filled with lead was built under the chamber in the 12th century to stop anyone from trying to mess with the graves. More layers of protection were added. These included strengthened stone walls and metal barriers that were meant to keep the location safe without changing its hallowed aspect.
During the Mamluk and Ottoman periods, metal grilles and well-planned ventilation apertures were installed on the outside of the building. These features let air flow through while keeping the chamber closed off. They show a compromise between practical architectural concerns and deep religious regard.
Building structure above the room
There is a flat roof on the inside of the Sacred Chamber. Above it, there is a complicated layered construction that includes ventilation systems and protective enclosures. The famous Green Dome, which is instantly identifiable and very important to Muslims all around the world, stands above everything else.
The dome was built in the late 1200s and did not have any special hue at first. In the 19th century, during the Ottoman Empire, it was painted green. This change made it distinct from nearby domes and a visual marker of the Prophet’s grave.
A golden crescent, a common design in Islamic architecture, sits at the top of the dome. It adds elegance and spiritual meaning to the building.
What the green dome and golden crescent mean spiritually
The Green Dome is very important spiritually, in addition to being beautiful. For many generations of believers, it has been a sign of love, longing, and a link to the Prophet ﷺ. Many people think of the color green as a symbol of peace, mercy, and paradise, which are all characteristics that the Messenger of Allah represented.
The golden crescent on top of the dome strengthens Islamic identity even more by standing for guidance, faith, and unity. These things turn the building into more than just a landmark. They make it a spiritual guide for millions of people who offer their greetings to the Prophet ﷺ from all across the world.
Muslims who come to Madinah still pray in the Sacred Chamber. Although it is technically surrounded and protected, any traveler who stands beside to pray, greet it, and think about the legacy of the Prophet ﷺ and his companions can feel its presence.
With care, humility, and respect, Al-Hujrah ash-Sharifah has been preserved. It is a timeless reminder of faith, sacrifice, and divine guidance. It is an everlasting spiritual heart under the Green Dome of Madinah.
