Tehran, Thekabarnews.com—Iran has taken credit for a major long-range military strike on a joint US-UK base on Diego Garcia Island in the Indian Ocean. Meanwhile, the attack is a big step up in tensions in the region.
Iranian officials said in an official statement on Sunday, March 22, that the attack, called “Operation True Promise III,” successfully hit important buildings at the strategic base. However, US and UK officials can’t confirm the damage.
The Islamic Republic News Agency, which the Iranian government runs, reported that the strike occurred late Saturday night at around 10:30 p.m. local time.
Military sources in Tehran said that the operation included a coordinated wave of decoy drones and long-range ballistic missiles. These were launched from Iran’s southern coast.
Amir Ali Hajizadeh, head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Aerospace Force, said the operation demonstrated Iran’s ability to strike targets previously considered beyond its operational range.
“The enemy thought it was safe in the Indian Ocean. This operation shows that we can reach any place,” he said.
Iran said that during the attack, it used advanced missile systems, including an improved version of the Khorramshahr ballistic missile. This missile was said to have a range of more than 4,500 kilometers.
Officials also mentioned the use of the Fattah-2 hypersonic missile. They said it could move at very high speeds and avoid missile defense systems.
The claims say that the weapons can fly at high speeds, follow unpredictable paths, and have special warheads. These warheads can break through strong targets like aircraft hangars and underground facilities.
Iranian news outlets showed pictures of Diego Garcia with several impact points. The reports included targets such as a main runway, satellite communication systems, and fuel storage locations.
Officials said the strike caused many problems for military operations in the area. These included disruptions to flight operations and communication capabilities.
Defense analysts caution that independent sources must confirm these claims before taking them seriously. The US and UK have not given detailed reports confirming damage at the base.
Confirming the reported strike would constitute a major breakthrough in modern military technology. This statement is especially true when it comes to long-range and hypersonic weapons.
It also shows how geopolitical tensions between Iran and Western powers are becoming more complicated. This assertion is particularly true in light of recent military advancements and the potential for escalated conflict in the region.
As the situation continues to evolve, the world closely watches how Washington and London will respond. The outcome will mean much for regional and global security.
