Thekabarnews.com—A large study published in JAMA says that drinking one to two cups of tea or two to three cups of coffee every day may lower the risk of dementia and cognitive decline.
The study was done by scientists from the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health, the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, and Mass General Brigham. The researchers looked at data from 131,821 people over a long period of time. They kept track of their eating habits and health over the years.
During the trial, 11,033 patients showed signs of dementia. Researchers compared individuals reporting cognitive difficulties with those who regularly consumed caffeinated coffee or tea.
The results showed that people who drank the most caffeinated coffee were 18 percent less likely to get dementia than people who didn’t drink any caffeine. Tea also had some protective effects. However, coffee’s effects were slightly stronger.
Daniel Wang, the study’s lead author and an associate scientist, warned against making too much of the results.
“Our results are promising, but it is important to remember that the effect size is small and there are many important ways to protect cognitive function as we get older. Our study suggests that drinking coffee or tea with caffeine could be one part of that problem,” Wang said.
Experts say that to keep your brain healthy, you need to make some changes to your lifestyle. These include getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet, being active, and spending time with other people. Caffeine and antioxidants are two chemicals that coffee and tea may have that could help the brain work better.
However, scientists caution against viewing caffeine as a universal solution. It’s still important to be moderate, especially if you’re sensitive to caffeine or have certain health problems.
This study adds to the growing body of evidence that what you eat every day may have an effect on your brain health in the long term. It also gives you a simple plan that you can follow. That plan might work with other efforts to stop dementia.
