Jakarta, Thekabarnews.com—After a lot of talk about East Kalimantan Governor Rudy Mas’ud buying an official car for Rp8.5 billion, Deputy Home Affairs Minister Bima Arya Sugiarto has warned the governor. The issue has sparked debate about the government’s spending and priorities.
Bima Arya said that regional governments need to make sure that buying official vehicles is still reasonable. He said purchases should meet real operational needs. Also, he said that government workers should not spend too much. Officials should manage public funds more responsibly, especially under current economic conditions.
“The purchase should not be too much. It should match the real needs on the ground,” Bima Arya said on Thursday, February 26.
The former Bogor mayor said that government officials must still consider what is appropriate when spending public funds, even if they follow procurement rules. He said that even if purchases follow all the rules set by the government, efficiency should still be a top priority.
Bima Arya says he has spoken directly with Governor Rudy Mas’ud about the issue. Rudy said he uses his car for work in East Kalimantan. He said the government doesn’t provide a car for the governor.
Bima Arya reiterated that officials must keep procurement costs within reasonable limits, even though he acknowledged the need for official facilities.
“If you need an official car, you should buy it at a fair price,” Bima Arya said.
Governor Rudy Mas’ud calmly answered the controversy. He stressed that the East Kalimantan provincial government has not yet given him an official car for his daily work in the area.
“We still do not have an official car from the provincial government in East Kalimantan. We own the car we drive now,” Rudy said on Tuesday, February 24.
Rudy said that the controversial vehicle unit is now in Jakarta to help with events in Indonesia and around the world. He said that East Kalimantan needs to have the right facilities to host foreign guests and investors. This is important because it will be the host province for the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) Authority.
He said that delegations from all over Indonesia and other countries come to the province a lot. So it is important to have good representation.
“Regional leaders shouldn’t drive unsafe cars on official business. We have to protect East Kalimantan’s honor,” Governor Rudi said.
The argument makes bigger points about how the government spends money. This is especially relevant since people want state budgets to be more open and efficient.
